Michael J Ferns is a BAFTA New Talent award winning Scottish director and editor, his passion for filmmaking having begun at a very young age.
Having had much success from a number of his short films, gaining recognition from leading industry professionals, he was offered the chance to direct his debut feature film, a historical fantasy entitled Kirk. The feature attracted much critical acclaim and has, to date, won several awards including ‘Best Independent Feature’ at the International Festival of Fantastic Films in 2009 and for Michael, ‘Best Director’ at the BAFTA New Talent Awards in 2010. Oscar nominated and BAFTA award winning cinematographer, Seamus McGarvey (Atonement, We Need To Talk About Kevin, The Avengers, Nowhere Boy etc) commended the film: “Kirk is beautifully photographed and evokes the period with a rich cinematic eye”.
Michael has directed and edited many short films in a wide variety of genres, his latest being a 20 minute drama named A Cold Day in June starring Kathryn Howden and Tracy Wiles. Other work has included directing commercials with internationally acclaimed singer and broadcaster Fiona Kennedy for the PBS network in the US. Michael has also directed commercials for the NHS, Diabetes UK and Bupa.
Michael has very recently graduated from The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with a BA in Digital Film and Television.
He has also directed music videos for The Lord of Rings star, Billy Boyd and his band, Beecake which were released to coincide with the band’s most recent album as well as a video for young singer, Ruairidh McDonald which was premièred at The House of Lords in London.
Having watched The Clown (Beecake music video) online – The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson and his partner Fran Walsh (producer) said “we absolutely love it!”
